I took a trip with Leela We met in Alameda She said, "I know a place where you can stay for free. It might not look like much. Feel free to use your touch. I'll be in the city working 9 to 3. We could meet up in the Mission If you only give permission now, baby. 5pm. Don't be late. I'll see ya down at Paxton Gate off 19th." Then we went to Casanova Carved our names in the show there Looking for anything to cut our teeth All the red light velvet & the feelings you were shelving Led us to your loft above Market Street Where you said that "Life is nothing more than to open or close a door stately." I said, "I guess. If you must ruminate, I believe I missed the last train to Ashby." Hey Leela! I loved ya but I had to go. Don't be a stranger If you want it you've got an open door. Then I found a quick solution Down in Oakland's revolution Picking up the pieces that you left behind You thought that you had asked too much I knew I wasn't good enough I tried to break it gently as I passed you by. I still recall the morning light Coming in your room beside the Tao Te Ching Although your room was homely I never did feel lonely when you were next to me Hey Leela! I loved ya but I had to go Don't be a stranger If you want it you've got an open door Now I'm on my own Hunting home the best I can Lless, you know I held you as close as I can

The Watchers 02:10
You can change a life In a second's time You can change your view If you allow your mind Time to still Time to heal Where the watchers kneel I hear you talking loud But your tongue don't speak That is you're saying plenty But the sound's oblique Moon up the hill Reflecting all your will Where the watchers kneel Keep turning pages Till you find the key Shine a light within you Shine a light on me Two sides of difference Two shapes in one Outside the field Where the watchers kneel That's where I'll be That's where I wanna go If it don't work out You'll be the first to know Moon up the hill Reflecting all your will Where the watchers kneel

When the stars come a falling down That's when I want you around When the world gets dark & feels like it's ending I'll be there by your side There ain't no pretending Baby, can't you see what you've done to me? When the stars are falling down That's when I want you around Yes, you know you'll never have to worry I waste no time I'll be there in a hurry Baby, can't you see I want you here with me? When the stars are falling down That's when I want you around
4.
Anodyne 03:10
Between the thought & what is said What is meant & what is left I try to tell no lies Just when you thought I was anodyne Maybe I was anodyne Make a point & watch it slip The space between the target missed Eyes wide to the finish line Just when you thought I was anodyne Baby I was anodyne

Rosa told me about her dream last Two moons filled up the sky One meant danger & one meant strife But it really didn't matter which one you tried Rosa told me I should shed some light "Come on, boy. Won't you make it right? I'll tell you something & I'll keep it sly. Nobody's got to know just what you're like." Rosa said it would be alright. Rosa told me I could make a wish. "Ask for something that you might have missed." "It ain't no secret. I don't keep it hid. You've got to die if you want to live." Rosa told me of ancient myths Leda's daughter & Medusa's kiss If you've got love it was made to give Never have I known a true love like this Rosa said it would be alright.

about

Recorded by Josh Murphy in Austin, TX, Marcus Lappin in Carbondale, IL, and Jeff Beers in Louisville, KY in November of 2020.

"Soul Remains" started with the idea of making something your younger self would have listened to. When I was an early teenager I liked pop punk music, 60's rock-n-roll, Soul, and R&B music. I'd record songs from the radio, mostly oldies stations, onto a cassette so I could re-listen & study them later. The sound and writing style I was going for on this series was imagining a pop punk group singing Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, The Temptations, The Kinks, Donovan, The Sapphires, The Ronettes, etc which would have been something my 14 year old self would have owned.

Soul Remains was recorded in three separate sessions. Soul Remains pts. 1 & 2 were recorded at the Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN on two different occasions in two different studios. A & B. Four years later Soul Remains pt. 3 was recorded in three subsequent locations in three different states due to the world wide pandemic forcing most of us to work largely in a remote way.

In any case I hope these recordings lighten your day, give ya some driving music, or make you remember the hopeless abandoned & freewheeling nature of being a kid. That was the purpose for making these sounds & sharing them with you.
